I go to Blade Show there every year in June. It’s usually around 11,000 people. For three days it’s really busy. I remember when every shop was full and also the restaurants were actually good.

I grew up in the area and this was my go-to mall from my mom taking us here as kids, hanging out with friends as teenagers, or just walking around checking out the shops as an adult. It's been really sad to see it dying over the last decade+ and now closing.

Atlanta native but from Gwinnett, not Cobb. I’ve only been to the Galleria and the convention century a few times. It always seemed like an afterthought compared to Cumberland and other malls. I do seem to recall news reports that Reagan stayed in that hotel during a visit to Atlanta in the 80s.

The really crazy thing is a lot of people today have no idea of how amazing that time was. Like when these malls were in their prime. You just don't know how it felt to be a part of that when it was new and thriving.

The music at the first is so beautiful. 🎹 I love Dead Malls. I love the buildings. 💞 I love the snow that was falling. 🩷❄️ I'm sitting at my place of work(Soda Steve's Restaurant). 🍔 🍟 My mom and brother can't come and get from work. Because our car keeps overheating. 🚗 🔥 Tomorrow is the 4th of July. 🎇🎆 We have to serve our customers. Everyone is off of work, except us. We have to make that money. I have to go. My bosses son is going to take me home.🤎

Memories of Sunrise Mall: Every Friday, took $10 from my paycheck and hopped on the N54/55, at the corner of Uniondale & Jerusalem Ave. walked through the parking lot into the mall (McDonald's on the right followed by the arcade). Took the escalator to the second floor which led almost directly to the movie theater box office. Bought a matinee ticket for $2.50 then browsed K.B. Toys waiting for the show. If I arrived at the mall early enough, I usually caught a second matinee then caught the N54/55 home and sometimes stopped for a slice at Tony's

It's totally car-dependent. People had no choice but to drive to it. It's way out in Cobb County, just barely technically "Atlanta" but is more like Marietta.

It exists because of the attached convention center. I go to things at the convention center every now and then. Before covid there was a build your own stir-fry shop across from where Murph's is now. At the exit near the parking garage there used to be a sports bar called Jocks and Jills. It's seems like a fairly good idea -- you have people coming to conventions, so they probably want a place to go shopping on breaks or whatever.

Used to be at "Jocks and Jill's every weekend during football season. The mall is not "dead" technically, of course, as it is still open, and functioning. Has conventions and competitions, in the convention space obviously. However, it essentially is redundant because Cumberland is a skywalk away. The developers just had too much time, and money, on their hands.

This one.. this one hurts. I remember going to this mall when I was no higher than my dad's thigh. There was once this attraction they'd hook you up to that let you bounce in the air like you were flying. We'd go there when gamestop was more popular. When discs were the most popular way to get games. I remember getting, at one point, a 360 with one of the assassin's creed games and gta 4. Rest in peace galleria.

Sunrise Mall was not built right after the Padre Staples (La Palmera) Mall. Padre Staples was in operation for many years before Sunrise came into play. It was, however, a very small mall. When Sunrise opened it was double the size of Padre Staples, and ushered in some fashionable staples of the 80's. Because of it's newness, and larger variety, it drew many more customers. It also featured some amenities that made it more "hip", such as rooftop parking, a cascading fountain by the escalators, and another fountain at one end. It's operation and growth, however, came at a mixed time for the economy of Corpus. The oil industry, a main industry at the time, hit a bump and the local economy took some hits. To remain viable, and competitive, Padre Staples quickly expanded to an even larger footprint than Sunrise, and pulled back many shoppers. The interest in mall shopping was waning a bit, though this would be a slower decline overall. By the late 80's Sunrise had already lost it's "hipness", and was showing wear and tear (the rooftop parking did not last but a few years), and the fountains had issues periodically. With the large expansion of Padre Staples, additional growth in strip malls on the other side of S.P.I.D. (South Padre Island Drive) and between the malls, and the financial fallout from big box store decline Sunrise soon lost most of its foot traffic. Though in truth, Corpus was never a large enough city for two malls, especially one block apart. Sunrise tried to stay alive by leasing its space to businesses and private colleges, but it could never develop a long term sustainable strategy. Too many forces were pulling against it. Though the market continued to prove troublesome for Padre Staples, around the turn of the century they sold out to investors who felt they could reinvigorate the mall for continued life. Rather than a focus on internal structure, they rebuilt sections of Padre Staples to focus on external operations with open air restaurants (or a portion being outside) and other "outside" businesses. As a rebrand they also dropped the old name Padre Staples and rebranded as La Palmera, which would better resonate with the large Hispanic culture. As the economy changed, no longer relying primarily on oil and gas, but expanding to other industries (including an ever expanding port operation), Corpus has better weathered economic changes, including it's old, but ever adapting mall. For all of its failure, I still remember fondly those Friday nights at the dollar theater with friends, and the admitted excitement of having a "big" mall with "modern" features.

Growing up in the Jeff area, I spent a huge chunk of my childhood in and around Wonderland. Both my sisters worked at Handy Andy in the 70's and my brother worked across the street at Jim's. I remember some tasty meals at the Piccadilly Circus cafeteria. My dad would take us to visit his friend Mike Davila in the basement at an optical shop. Does anyone remember the name of the department store across the street on Crossroads Blvd. that is now Gold's Gym? It was there in the 1970's? Bring back the Bijoux!
